Introducing the 2025–2027 Young Scholars in American Religion

2025–2027 Young Scholars in American Religion Cohort

Ten scholars have been chosen to join the 2025–2027 cohort for the Young Scholars in American Religion program. The members of this cohort were chosen for their commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and interdisciplinary collaboration within the fields of American Religion.

These scholars, representing both private and public universities across North America, boast vast professional experiences and unique interests relating to the study of American Religion. As members of the Young Scholars program, they will develop a community of learning to support better inquiry, instruction, and dissemination around their particular topics of interest.

During their two years in the program, the Young Scholars will be mentored by Gerardo Martí, William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Sociology at Davidson College, and Tisa Wenger, Professor of American Religious History at Yale Divinity School. Gerardo and Tisa are recognized leaders in the field and bring extensive experience as tenured faculty, award-winning authors, organizational directors, and conference speakers. Tisa also has familiarity with the program, having participated in the 2007–2009 cohort. These mentors will serve to better prepare the Young Scholars for advanced careers in academia as teachers, researchers, and thought leaders of American religion.

The Young Scholars in American Religion program is designed to support the next generation of leading teachers and scholars in American religion, who are already at work in our colleges and universities today.

Made possible through a grant from Lilly Endowment, the Center for the Study of Religion and American Culture assists these early career scholars in the improvement of their teaching and research and in the development of professional communities. In addition to its historic concentration on teaching and research, the Young Scholars Program now includes sessions devoted to such other professional topics as constructing a tenure portfolio, publication, grant writing, and department politics.
