Religion in America, 1600-1865

We will approach religious history as social and cultural historians. We must strike a balance between content and interpretation: you may want to find out “what happened,” but through class readings it will be demonstrated that “facts” about the past must be interpreted. We will learn different types of interpretive approaches along the way. Then we move into a more careful chronological consideration of religion in American history as presented in other readings.

This syllabus was created for the Young Scholars in American Religion program.
