Congregations’ Social and Community Engagement

A religious congregation’s major purpose is to serve as a location for worship services. However, many congregations in the United States do not limit themselves to only offering worship. Many congregations engage their neighborhoods and communities by offering outreach, social services, and by serving as a place for the larger community to gather. This learning module will explore a nationally representative survey of congregations in the United States to learn more about how congregations extend their mission beyond worship.

The ARDA Lesson Plans integrate content from the ARDA and other sources into teachable units. The lessons are designed for courses in a wide range of disciplines, including history, political science, psychology, religious studies, and sociology. This assignment was created for the Association of Religion Data Archives.
