Religion in United States Public Schools

The role of religion in public schools has long been a topic of debate. Many believe that religious practices, such as prayer and reading the Bible, belong in the schools of a historically Christian nation. Others say that the separation of church and state demands that religion be kept out of public schools entirely. The people who oversee these decisions (politicians and school administrators) often look to the results of survey data to gauge how the public feels about the state of religion in education today. This learning module will explore the opinions of average Americans.

The ARDA Lesson Plans integrate content from the ARDA and other sources into teachable units. The lessons are designed for courses in a wide range of disciplines, including history, political science, psychology, religious studies, and sociology. This assignment was created for the Association of Religion Data Archives.
