The First Amendment and American Religious Freedom

The First Amendment affects American culture in profound ways, and many Americans see it as an integral part of the nation’s identity. Despite its importance in American culture, many believe the First Amendment has come under attack in recent years. Among those who believe the First Amendment is under attack, some believe freedom of religion is being eroded while others believe freedom of speech is facing the greatest threat. Still others see U.S. employers as a threat to both freedom of religion and freedom of speech. This module will explore these First Amendment issues using data found on the Association of Religion Data Archives.

The ARDA Lesson Plans integrate content from the ARDA and other sources into teachable units. The lessons are designed for courses in a wide range of disciplines, including history, political science, psychology, religious studies, and sociology. This assignment was created for the Association of Religion Data Archives.
